Today I got the opportunity to listen to Positionless podcast, featuring NBA GM David Griffin. Speaking on his journey to the NBA, what it's like working with superstar Lebron James, and what he looks for in a leader and building a team.
David Griffin grew up in Arizona, always being a fan of the game but his hooping career came to an end in high school. David said, being so short in high school I didn't even get a tryout. Although he never played after high school his interactions within the game never ended. He continued looking for connections and pushed himself everyday within the game. Until one day one laying on the couch he received a call from a buddy within the Phoenix Suns, where it all started.
David also talked a lot about building the perfect team, and what he looks for. Overall he looks for positive influences, strong leaders. Within his leaders he looks for trust, from gm to player or president to trainer. The positive and trust matters and starts from the top. Another quality he spoke on is empowering team members, giving each and everyone of them an opportunity to shine and continue to work.
Communicating is another topic at the top of his list, being open and creating that family feel within an organizations gives everyone the confidence and opportunities to continue to work, and get better. But most importantly for himself he looks at being honest, and respecting everyone. Being honest from the very beginning, whether theirs a possibility of being traded or being sent to the G-league for a younger player. Being open and honest with them gives them the opportunity to learn and grow from the opportunity, learn, and continue to work.
Overall I take a lot from this podcast, and can tell why he has that strong partnership within each organization he works in. Being an Gm or President within the NBA can make the communications with players a tough job. Creating that family feel and being honest, will cause each and everyone of the members within the organization to flourish and grow.
